Background

Center for Capacity Building of Voluntary Organisation (CCBVO) is a non-political, non-profitable, social development and research organization. The organization incepted in July 23, 1999 in Rajshahi district for the development of socio-economic-cultural condition and empowerment of the Ethnic community like Santal, Oroan, Mundari, Mahali, Paharia, Mahato (kurmi), Pahan, Sing, Rajowar, Karmakar, Mushar, Rajbangshi, Muriar, Malo, Khattria-Barman, Gando, Rai, Bejia, Kole, Bagdi, Turi, Murari Rabidas, Hari, Bhuimali (Bhumali), Ramdas, Lahar, Bhuiya, Maler, Khaira, Dhuna, Teli and Pal including extreme destitute women, poor and landless people live in Barind tract, north-west part of Bangladesh. Ultimate vision is to work for building ‘Right based, poverty free developed Bangladesh’. CCBVO has been giving special attention to the Hunger, Poverty, Rights, Health, Education, Gender Equity, Conflict Analysis & Peace Building, Environment/Climate Change and Emergency Response.

CCBVO also has been giving priority to the Ethnic community of the Barind Tract those who are most vulnerable in the society. The organization has experienced and learned to address the causes of the vulnerable situations of these communities such as food insecurity, lack of health and education, lack of recognition as indigenous, Cultural and Political exploitation, Discrimination, Social Exclusion and Conflicts. Continuous land grabbing by the different quarters and making victims of corruptions and force to eviction of the ethnic communities may bring the result of landlessness and massive migration. It is reported that 87% of the ethnic families of the northern Bangladesh are become landless, 5% families are marginalized and 90% of the ethnic families live in below poverty line.  As a result, the ethnic people in Bangladesh are indisposed to have the rights and participation to development program and susceptible to crises of cultural and social identity. Therefore, CCBVO is trying to uphold its capacity & working dimensions through the working process. Thereby it has developed research oriented, socio-ecological, holistic development and right based NGO in the Barind region of the country.

Considering the above context CCBVO is implementing Rokkhagola Village Based Sustainable Food Security Programme for the Ethnic Community in Rajshahi (i.e. in the Barind region) with the support of Bread for the World (BftW) since 2013, currently covering 35 ethnic villages. During the inception the program was started only with 5 villages then Bangladesh Freedom Foundation (BFF) supported the program from 2005 to 2012. The program gives priority to re-construct their village based social organization and enhancing sustainable food security of the ethnic people by innovating and developing Rokkhagola Food Bank and also forming Social Capital at food bank. CCBVO also assists ethnic people for enhancing access to local resources and local government services along with preserving their ethnic knowledge, culture, beliefs and practices. However, CCBVO works to facilitate for enabling capacity of Ethnic people to work men and women together to develop Gender Equity with a view of achieving basic needs as well as creating peaceful atmosphere to establish rights and confidence.

Besides, CCBVO is giving its full efforts in Promoting Science Education in secondary schools(PSE) project with the assistance of Bangladesh Freedom Foundation (BFF) since 2012 to 2018. From 2019 CCBVO has been implementing the PSE project with its own fund, covering 40 schools at Godagari and Paba upazila of Rajshahi district. It is reported that students in science discipline is reducing gradually due to lack of laboratory and practical facilities, shortage of skill science teachers, additional initiative at rural level. The science students of rural areas are facing big competition in getting admission for higher studies in the expected colleges and universities.  Despite the different constraints and challenges the teachers and students along with the guardians of the selected schools are impressed and appreciate the efforts of the project. The project has given support to establish science clubs of students for discussion, practical experiments, organising science fair in collaboration of other schools with support of schools along with teachers, head teachers. CCBVO is encouraging the rural secondary educational institution to promote science education inclusively as because 80% students of the country are from rural areas and they are deprived from national educational facilities.

CCBVO, Rajshahi has been performing its active role as a leading organisation for Campaign on Campaign for Citizen Right to Information (CRTI) in Rajshahi district since 2010 to make aware the people on Right to Information Act-2009 (RTI) along with the Constitution of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh in the urban and rural (Upazila level) working areas, in collaboration with other organizations. For achieving the goal CCBVO has implemented Campaign for Right to Information from 2011 to 2018. Since 2019 CCBVO has implemented Campaign for Citizen Right to Information (CRTI) program as pilot phase. Considering the achievements and need of the CRTI program is running its 1st phase with own fund of CCBVO.

CCBVO has been performing active role on Community Legal Rights Awareness and Services (CLRS) in Rajshahi district with its own fund. During the inception the program was started since 2014 to make aware the people on Human Rights in the rural working areas. During the period of 2014-2018 the program implemented as Community Legal Services (CLS) program with financial support of BLAST. From 2019 CCBVO has implemented the program naming Community Legal Rights Awareness and Services (CLRS) as pilot phase. Considering the achievements and need of the CLRS program is running 1st phase with its own fund of CCBVO.

As a social development organization, CCBVO has been trying to undertake different strategic activities in collaboration with concern government department and NGOs through training, workshop, awareness building in the urban and rural working areas. The main objectives are to develop adaptation skills and Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation, promoting good practices and implementing options to build resilience of ethnic communities involved in agriculture to the impact of climate change and extreme weather events.

Further, CCBVO is committed towards socio-ecological and holistic development of the vulnerable community applying right based and integrated approach, democratic practices, and encompassing management framework with the participation of target groups including disadvantaged girls, boys and students in all level as development partners.
